What are the Risks of Rhinoplasty?
What is the Recovery?
Rhinoplasty procedures are most commonly performed under general anesthesia. Following surgery, you will likely have a nasal cast on the outside of the nose, protecting the nasal skin and reducing nasal swelling. Bleeding from the nostrils may occur for the first 24 -48 hours but should diminish in a tapered fashion. Swelling is expected after any surgery, becoming most pronounced on day 3 following surgery. Nasal swelling diminishes quickly following rhinoplasty, allowing patients to be socially presentable within 10-14 days, however, the final effects of rhinoplasty may not be fully appreciated for six to twelve months following surgery, once all swelling has fully subsided. Physical exercise or heavy lifting is avoided the first week after surgery. Contact sports and strenuous activity should be avoided for six to eight weeks following rhinoplasty surgery to allow for nasal bones and cartilage to optimally heal.
Recovery rule of 2s:
- 2 weeks: socially presentable
- 2 months: swelling hits 40-50% reduction
- 2 years: skin is back to baseline
Potential Complications
- Hematoma (blood collection), bruising, swelling
- Infection
- Septal perforation (hole)
- Scars
- Numbness in lip and teeth
- Need for revision surgery
