Revision Rhinoplasty

Revision rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure performed to correct or revise previous nasal surgeries, typically addressing unsatisfactory outcomes from prior rhinoplasty procedures. This specialized surgery aims to improve both the function and aesthetics of the nose, like breathing difficulties or cosmetic concerns such as asymmetry, irregular contours, or nasal deformities resulting from previous surgeries, trauma, or natural healing.

Due to alterations made during initial surgeries and potential scar tissue formation, revision rhinoplasty is often more challenging than primary rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty (commonly referred to as a “nose job”) is a procedure to correct the size, shape, and function of the nose.

During your consultation, Virginia Beach Plastic Surgeon Dr. Virginia Teti, will thoroughly examine the current condition of your nose and discuss options to correct the details that keep you from looking the way you want. She will also listen attentively to your concerns and answer any questions you may have. Dr. Teti wants you to feel educated and comfortable throughout your process. Together, you will craft a personalized treatment plan that fits your unique needs and lifestyle.

Am I a Candidate?

Reasonable candidates for rhinoplasty include men, women and teenagers post puberty, who demonstrate the following :

  • Nose is too large or too small
  • Nose does not seem to fit with the rest of your face
  • Nose is crooked, badly shaped, or out of alignment
  • Impaired nasal breathing
  • Desire for improvement, not perfection, in the appearance of your nose
  • Good mental and physical health promoting a positive outlook and realistic expectations

Your procedure

The procedure is typically performed as an outpatient procedure, allowing one to return home after the case. Performed under general anesthesia, you will not experience any pain during the surgery. Dr. Teti will perform a barely visible incision along the base of the nose, along with all remaining incisions inside the nostrils. Next, precise identification and reshaping of bone and cartilage will be performed with meticulous technique with care to ensure facial harmony and optimal nasal function. Finally, all incisions will be closed with suture and a nasal cast will be placed along the bridge of the nose.

Dr. Teti has spent her career training with experts in the field of rhinoplasty, honing her craft to execute subtle nuance and meticulous detail, creating a structurally sound, elegant and functionally optimal nose.

What are the Risks of Rhinoplasty?

Some of the risks involved with a rhinoplasty may include adverse reactions to anesthesia, bruising, swelling, nasal bleeding, infection, scarring, septal perforation, persistent asymmetry or impaired nasal breathing. Bleeding from the nostrils may occur for the first 24 -48 hours but should diminish in a tapered fashion. Swelling is expected after any surgery, becoming most pronounced on day 3 following surgery. Nasal swelling diminishes quickly following rhinoplasty, allowing patients to be socially presentable within 10-14 days, however, the final effects of rhinoplasty may not be fully appreciated for six to twelve months following surgery, once all swelling has fully subsided.

What is the Recovery?

Rhinoplasty procedures are most commonly performed under general anesthesia. Following surgery, you will likely have a nasal cast on the outside of the nose, protecting the nasal skin and reducing nasal swelling. Physical exercise or heavy lifting is avoided the first week after surgery. Contact sports and strenuous activity should be avoided for six to eight weeks following rhinoplasty surgery to allow for nasal bones and cartilage to optimally heal.

Recovery rule of 2s:

  • 2 weeks: socially presentable
  • 2 months: swelling hits 40-50% reduction
  • 2 years: skin is back to baseline

Potential Complications

  • Hematoma (blood collection), bruising, swelling
  • Infection
  • Septal perforation (hole)
  • Scars
  • Numbness in lip and teeth
  • Need for revision surgery
