Botox® Cosmetic

Botox® Cosmetic is a safe treatment which has been used to treat multiple conditions over the prior 2 decades, and is FDA-approved to treat the wrinkles between the eyebrows. Frequently Asked Questions
How does Botox® Cosmetic work?
Botox® Cosmetic has the active agent botulinum toxin that functions as an inhibitor of neuromuscular communication. Specifically, it blocks the signals transmitted from nerve endings to their very specific muscle fibers. Botulinum toxin is effective and has a well-established safety profile generated over the prior 2 decades.
Who is a good candidate of Botox® Cosmetic?
Any patient interested in reducing the wrinkles associated with dynamic function is a great candidate for this treatment. Botox® Cosmetic is most often used aesthetically to treat the vertical wrinkles between the eyebrows, the deep wrinkles of the forehead, and the “crow’s feet” wrinkles near the eyes. The wrinkles around the nose, lips, and neck can also be treated. Patients are generally satisfied with a refreshed and less “harsh” appearance.
When will I see the results and how long do results last?
Results generally begin to become evident in 3-4 days. The effects continue to develop over the first 2 weeks and then remain the same for the next 3-4 months. Some patients have reported results for as long as 6 months.
Where are the injections performed?
The injections are performed always by Dr. Sparano, and in his procedure room. The time required for injection is generally less than 10 minutes, but Dr. Sparano carefully plans his injections and discusses post-treatment care with his patients.
Is the injection session painful?
There is a minimal amount of pain with the injection of Botox® Cosmetic and Dr. Sparano uses of the smallest needles made. No anesthesia is required for the injections.
Is Botox® Cosmetic the same as a facial filler?
Botox® Cosmetic and facial fillers are very different from one another. As described above, Botox® Cosmetic functions to relax muscles that cause wrinkles. Facial fillers function to fill deep furrows, folds, or wrinkles, and can be used to augment certain parts of the face.
Is there downtime after a Botox® Cosmetic injection?
There is no real downtime after an injection and patients can generally resume their normal daily activities. We generally recommend that patients remain in an upright position and refrain from exercise over the 4-6 hours following an injection.
